Emergency Kit for Winter Weather

Travel season is coming! According to AAA, last year 46 million people hit the road for Thanksgiving while nearly double that traveled for the holiday season! With that many people driving, there are bound to be problems and issues that arise when traveling. Before you jump in the car this year, here are some emergency items that you should keep in your car just in case.

Car Phone Charger

This may seem like a no brainer, but back up phone chargers are a must have. Portable USB phone chargers are also a great help in case your car battery dies.

Jumper Cables/Jump-Start Kit

Cold temperatures can wreck havoc on your car battery, especially if you haven’t checked your battery in a while.

Flash Light

You might be saying “there’s an app for that.” Well, yes, but the real thing can be more powerful and last longer. Make sure you have backup batteries as well.

Water and Snacks

This is especially helpful if you’re traveling on longer trips and help resist the temptation to stop at your favorite fast food restaurant. It also provides sustenance in case you get stuck while on the road.

Blanket

Your car is your main source of heat on a winter road trip. It’s good to have a backup incase you lose power. If you’re traveling with passengers, make sure you have enough for everyone.

Tire Sealant

Changing a tire on the side of the road is very dangerous, especially if you’re traveling at night. While tire sealant isn’t meant to be a permanent fix, it can help get you to a place where you can safely change the tire.

Windshield Scraper, Shovel and Cat Litter

Snow, ice, and slush are difficult to drive in, even if you have 4WD. The scraper will get the ice and snow off your car while the shovel and cat litter can help you gain some traction on slippery surfaces.

Before you set out on the roads, bring in your car for a quick check and be on the lookout for winter weather and slick conditions.
